Some will start because of a recommendation from family or
friends – we have several family groups as members and friends
are often intrigued enough to come along and have a go.
We also have strong links with local junior schools and send
our community coaches into them to do a presentation during Assembly.
Elmbridge Borough Council runs ‘Summer Fun’ courses
and the club takes part in these each year.
We also take individual beginners who have heard about us by reading
newspaper articles, seen our leaflets, watched paddlers on the
river or simply passed the club and thought it looked fun. We
also attract people who have used our web site!
Children
Those wishing to start canoeing should preferably be 10 or over
and strong swimmers. You should be able to swim 100m in canoeing
clothes (thermal top, T shirt and shorts).
We run beginner courses throughout the summer from April/May
to September. These start at the beginning of each month and last
for four weeks, paddling twice a week. The course costs £25
for the eight sessions. For bookings see contact
us.
At the end of the course, if the child is suitable and wishes
to join the club, he/she will join in with one of the training
groups.
Adults
Adult beginners have their own session at 18.00 on Friday evening
during British Summer Time. For further details contact
us. It is helpful if you let us know in advance that you would
like to attend.
We have an adult recreational group which goes out on its own
on Saturday mornings at 9.30, although this group is unsuitable
for beginners. Adults keen to improve can usually be accommodated
in the children’s groups by arrangement with the coaches.
If you are already an experienced adult paddler looking for the
challenge of training with the best then please contact Roland
Lawler. See contact us
