Because our focus is on racing and training paddlers to be competitive, we aim to introduce children to the sport between the ages of ten and fifteen. Some will start because of a recommendation from family (we have several family groups as members) and friends
of our paddlers are often intrigued enough to want to try out the sport.
We also have strong links with local junior schools and send
our coaches to them to do a presentation during Assembly.
Children have also heard about us by reading
newspaper articles, seen our leaflets, watched paddlers on the
river or simply passed the club and thought it looked fun. They may also have seen our web site!
All children start by coming on one of our beginner courses, which run throughout the summer from April
to September, excluding August. These start at the beginning of each month and last
for four weeks, paddling twice a week. The course costs £25
for the eight sessions. For bookings see contact
us.
Those wishing to start canoeing should be strong swimmers. You should be able to swim 100m in canoeing
clothes (thermal top, T shirt and shorts).
For more information see Club News / Beginner Courses.
At the end of the course, if the child has made suitable progress and wishes
to join the club, he/she will join in with one of the training
groups.
