Sprint racing is one of the two Olympic events in the canoeing world
and takes place on flat water, often over the same courses used
by rowers.
Beginners can start sprint racing at the Grand Prix events held
locally. These are organized by the canoe clubs in the West Thames
region and paddlers race against others of their own ability. They
race over distances of 200 and 500 metres. Elmbridge organizes one
of these events in May.
Once paddlers have been awarded their club colours (handicap 32)
and are confident in their boats, then they can move on to compete
at one of the five national regattas held at the National Watersports
Centre in Nottingham. The regatta in July is held in age groups,
but all others are raced in ability groups. There are separate classes
for Boys, Girls, Senior Men, Senior Women and Veteran Men and promotions
are attainable within each of these classes on reaching the required
standard. Races are held in K1, K2 and K4 over distances of 200,
500, 1000, 2500 and 5000 metres. Racing kayaks have to conform to
international standards and specifications.
For those selected to be in national squads, there are many international
regattas throughout the year.
